There is one Clive Barker novel that is not in print in America: Sacrament. The reasons are inscrutable -- this is a crime. But, sly dogs that we are, we've managed to snag a couple of import copies. Sacrament is one of the man's best, and some believe it is his most personal. It's definitely worth your time, and it's the perfect gift for the discerning Barker/fantasy/horror fanatic.

In Celebration of Poe

This year marks the 200th anniversary of Edger Allan Poe’s birth.

What better way to celebrate than to immerse yourself in his dark world?

I urge you to pick up and read (or reread) one of the many wonderful Poe anthologies available or perhaps take a quick jaunt through his melodic poetry pieces, like “Annabel Lee”. (My personal favorite)

Or if you wish to read a fiction novel inspired by him then I recommend:

Black Plume: The Suppressed Memoirs of Edgar Allan Poe
by David Madsen

As the book states, this is a must for any of Poe’s fans. A word of caution though as you need to be familiar with Poe’s work to really "get" this book.

Capt. Hook

Capt. Hook - The Adventures of a Notorious Youth
by J.V. Hart and illustrated by Brett Helquist

This book covered capt hook's early years...as a rather spooky youth. He raised attack spiders, made a guillotine for science class, stood tall pale and thin with long black locks...what's not to love?!:)

This is the author's first novel but he has written many screenplays including Bram Stoker's Dracula and Hook. This would have made a great movie...I doubt it would happen though as there are some slightly sinister death scenes near the end that may make Disney squirm.

Oh and the illustrator is the same from Series of Unfortunate Events...another great dark series for kiddies!
